Longest Day 5K Race Report by Nancy Tinari

Longest Day 5K

A small group of Phoenix members competed in this year's edition of the Longest Day 5K, the 12th event in the Timex Series. It was a notable night for Phoenix families, as husband/wife team Larry Lorette and Maureen Curtin ran personal bests of 17:57 and 21:06. Maureen's time was good enough to earn her 3rd place in the women's masters category. Both runners were beaming after the race, as you will see if you look at George's race video (on the blog at www.phoenixrunning936thermal.blogspot.com ). The three-member Frilund family team was impressive, as Adam beat his dad Dave for the first time in a while, though not by much! Their times were 18:40 and 18:43. New runner Cindy Frilund, completing her 3rd 5K race, cut a chunk off her previous time with a 28:53.

Anna Hilborn ran strongly (yes, those 2K loops in the park are working!) but was sorry she didn't quite break 20:00 with her 20:04 clocking. Joey Gargaro wasn't far behind Anna in 22:12. Ruby Ferguson is coming back well after knee surgery and was pleased with her time of 24:37.

Once again, it was a fine sunny evening out at UBC, with a cool temperature ideal for running. To view complete race results (as well as results for the companion 10K race), go to www.winningtime.ca .
